244 School Zone Tickets Issued

244 School Zone Tickets

244 School Zone tickets hit drivers driving too fast in school zones in the first two weeks of Dallas ISD calendar year.

Back to school does not always remind adults to drive with care and caution around schools.

Despite the increased patrols some drivers are not getting the message per one local news report.

“We know the area well,” Hillary Taylor said. “Love the area. Love the neighborhood” referring to their home near Mockingbird Elementary.

However, similar to the Dallas Police Department, Taylor has started to see a rise in people speeding down her road the past few weeks. For Taylor, she said her road is in a unique situation because it’s the first street drivers can cut through to avoid school zones.

This is worrisome for her because she said there are a lot of families with young children oftentimes playing outside, whether it’s during the school year or not.

“It’s not great,” Taylor said. “Especially when you have littles. I mean, we’re out in the front yard and cars are just whipping through.”

Taylor said there are also many students walking to and from school during the day.

“It really just comes down to people being aware and courteous,” Taylor said. “I mean, these are kids. People just totally miss school zones.”

Beyond the school zone speed enforcement, the district is mandating clear backpacks for older students. There is poor evidence clear backpacks will solve district violence issues.

“Clear bookbags are a well intended but relatively ineffective measure,” said Michael Dorn. Dorn is a former police officer and Executive Director of Safe Haven International.

Dallas ISD has not released the results of its parent survey on clear backpacks. They did say they will issue a single backpack to students and will not replace it if it becomes damaged.

In December 2021, parents were notified of an elementary student with a firearm on a bus. At the time, parents said the note normalized the situation.

There were also multiple protests at Dealey Montessori with at least two events where adults were armed on campus.

Spring Break Still On For Dallas ISD Transportation?

Spring Break Still On For Dallas ISD Transportation

Is Spring Break still on for Dallas ISD Transportation or did students jump ahead with their clocks unnecessarily?

A post on the Dallas Townview Magnets Foundation website noted that buses were running up to an hour late again.

Spring Break Still On For Dallas ISD Transportation – A Continuing Issue

Other Side Dallas has previously reported on several times when buses were not running on time immediately following a holiday.

In November 2021 after Thanksgiving and again in January 2022, transportation services was unable to ensure buses arrived in time to get students to campus on time.

Holiday Over Except For Dallas ISD Transportation

Dallas ISD Transportation

Dallas ISD Transportation is continuing its Thanksgiving holiday with reports of multiple riders missing rides to school this morning, particularly to the Townview Magnet Complex. Riders at the Hillcrest High School location numbered multiple dozen and waited for at least an hour.

It is not clear how many total schools are being affected, but Other Side Dallas has been on hold for forty-five minutes as of this writing.

Dallas ISD Transportation

Dallas Independent School District has generally been credited with a strong turnaround of the transportation system this year after decades of corruption with the Dallas County Schools scandal. Last December, attorney Richard Reynolds was sentenced for his role in that corruption.

DFW Terminal Link Doesn’t Link

DFW Terminal Link

On multiple occassions in the past three weeks, Other Side Dallas staff has watched as DFW Terminal Link busses pass by minority riders at the correct location at the airport terminal for a pick up.

DFW Terminal Link Doesn't Link

Every Tuesday including yesterday and the two weeks prior Other Side Dallas staff have gone to the airport to watch Terminal Link bus operations and regularly there are drivers that will bypass minorities at Terminal Link locations in Terminals A, C, and D.

DFW Airport Media Relations did not respond to request for comment by email.

DFW Terminal Link One Of Many Challenges

In recent weeks airlines at DFW Airport have had to battle changing mask mandate standards between the federal and state governments and there have been numerous assaults including between passengers and a apassenger assaulting a member of the flight crew.

Airport parking has been a long term issue in Dallas and new parking garages have been built to respond to the area’s growing needs.

American Airlines Disrupts DC

American Airlines Disrupts DC

American Airlines disrupts DC air traffic just one week after thousands of Southwest flight cancellations disrupted air traffic across the country.

On Saturday, emergency crews at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. responded to an American jet that has been stopped in the middle of the airport’s main runway.

The jet sat on the runway for t least ten minutes before fire and rescue crews arrived to Dave Statter.

American Airlines Disrupts DC

In a statement, American Airlines said, “American Eagle flight 4965, operated by Republic Airways, with service from Memphis to Regan National Airport (DCA) experienced a mechanical issue upon landing at DCA. The flight landed safely and there were no reported injuries. All passengers were bussed to the terminal.”

Their statement continues, “there were 71 passengers and four crew on board.”

American Airlines Disrupts DC and Texas

Earlier in the week American executives stated they would continue to comply with federal mask mandates despite Governor Abbott’s state level executive order stating mask mandates were forbidden.

Willis Winters Blues

Willis Winters Park

Willis Winters Park must be experiencing some winter blues after Dallas Morning News writer Sharon Grigsby described the park as a “zombie football stadium” risen again from the dead in her East Dallas neighborhood.

Grigsby described local Facebook pages exploding and indeed they are of late. One error may prove fatal to the project: blocking Avi S Adelman from commenting.

The new stadium plan would include 4000 seats, but does not address the lack of parking in the immediate area surrounding Willis Winters Park currently which is used for baseball, football, soccer, and softball.

Adelman, famous for a lawsuit against Dallas Area Rapid Transit for wrongful arrest has been active in the Dallas community for decades. Administrators of one Facebook group thought silencing him would stop his questions.

Willis Winters Park v Avi S Adelman

Adelman has been blocked from the Randall/Winters Park Improvement Project News Facebook group discussing the Willis Winters Park project immediately following the post below.

Willis Winters Park Discussion by Avi S Adelman

Avi S Adelman has been down this road before and is going directly after questions about who is funding what. As local political pages go the language is not over the top.

An important point made by both Adelman and Grigsby is the upcoming Dallas ISD Bond 2020 vote. Currently Dallas ISD has no funds programmed for a new stadium for Woodrow Wilson High School in its $3.7B bond package, bnut numerous bonds have passed and then funds were reprogrammed.

The Park Board is holding a meeting Thursday, October 1. Interested parties can sign up to speak to the board via Webex.

Traffic Advisory: Preston Road

Traffic Alert

Preston Road motorists are advised that on Thursday, October 1, 2020, between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., southbound lanes of Preston Road (SH 289) will be reduced to one lane of traffic for utility construction in the pavement. The lane reduction will be along Preston Road from Walnut Hill Lane to Joyce Way.

Preston Road Traffic Advisory Map

The road closures are required for construction work on a Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) pipe replacement project. Construction work at Joyce Way began in June 2020 and is anticipated to be complete by November 2020.

Preston Road Project

Motorists are urged to follow signage in the construction zone. During the road closures, construction crews will be connecting new underground water pipes to the existing water system. The construction will require water service to be temporarily shut-off to some customers in the area to allow crews to make the connections. Water service to impacted customers will be interrupted for about four to six hours, beginning at 10 a.m. DWU staff will go door-to-door to alert impacted customers and will also leave written notification. DWU staff will wear masks and practice social-distancing when going door-to-door.

For questions or concerns about the project, please contact Construction Superintendent, Mike Warren, at his office number (214) 670-8082 or cell number (214) 243-4292.
