Dirty Dallas is in the top third of dirty cities in the United States.
Per a new report, Dallas ranks 38th out of more than 150 dirty cities. This ranking makes it slightly more clean than Houston and San Antonio.
Six of the top fifty most dirty cities are in Texas.
Other Side Dallas loves living in the city and access to the arts, culture, and nightlife – when safe to be part of it. However, more residents usually align with more dirt. This includes pollution, rats, and trash.
Some cities are more effective than others in tackling these issues.
Lawnstarter compared over 150 of the largest cities across the United States in four categories. Those were pollution, living conditions, infrastructure, and consumer satisfaction.
Dirty Dallas
A few years ago Dallas improved its standing with rats – with fewer of them in the city per an Orkin report.
However, during COVID19, trash pileups happened and there were numerous delays in city garbage service.
These delays led some in the community to start their own “Clean the Block” initiatives to improve Dallas.
Dallas Zoo Groundhog Day has come three weeks early, but it’s here – again. The Dallas Zoo has lost a clouded leopard from its enclosure at the South Dallas zoo.
The zoo is closed while authorities work to locate the animal.
Dallas Police are currently assisting in locating the animal. Due to restrictions by Chief Garcia it is unclear how many officers are involved.
Zoo keepers are the zoo discovered damage to her enclosure. They believe the clouded leopard, named Nova, escaped. There has been some discussion she was stolen from the zoo.
Harrison Edell, the zoo’s vice president of animal care and conservation, delivered a statement. This came after the zoo initiated a “Code Blue.”
Edell said, “the cat that we’re looking for is about 20 pounds – between 20 and 25 pounds. She does not pose a danger to humans. And more likely than not, when she’s scared, she’s going to climb a tree, stay out of our way, hunt some squirrels and birds and hope not to be noticed.”
Dallas Zoo Groundhog Day – Another Embarrassment For Dallas
Since 2013 nearly hundreds of animals have died in the hands of Dallas Zoo staff. This includes multiple giraffes – leading to a SNL skit, a Silverback gorilla, and a zebra.
It is unclear if other local media will give another pass to continuing issues at our zoo or if they will sit on the sidelines criticizing questions of accountability.
In 2009, Dallas City Council members voted unanimously to turn management of zoo.
At the time the move was hailed for saving he city $1.5 M per year. Supporters said it would lead to increased donation, but there were concerns at the time over the speed the plan was presented and advanced.
Additionally, the public’s access to the zoo and zoo records was curtailed.
New year new crime and no end in sight for Dallas citizens. Tuesday, Dallas saw three separate shootings across the city.
Dallas Police Department seems to have no answers beyond baseball style sabermetric data that tells their story.
Dallas police went to North Jim Miller Road Tuesday afternoon after 1:00PM. They located Kendreal Jones who was on the ground secondary to a shooting. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers later went to McCallum Boulevard in North Dallas where an unidentified man was found dead in a parking lot. He was pronounced dead on scene and not transported.
Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, a third man was found on McCree Road, near Interstate 635.
There are no suspects in any of the three cases. Dallas Police is asking for those with information to contact them.
New Year New Crime More Shootings
The three shootings come the same day County Judge Clay Jenkins opened the doors at the county jail.
Dallas City Council seems to be no better. The council has a decided majority supportive of protecting criminals and defunding the police. A minority on council protects unaccountable officers.

2023 is another opportunity to get our neighborhoods right.
We have the right to expect accountability and transparency from schools and local government.
We have the right to know our streets are safe, protected by well funded police and firefighters.
Our neighborhoods deserve the chance to chooses representatives that place them before special interests.
Happy New Year 2023
Again, our best for you in 2023. Here’s hoping we open a new book and use that opportunity to create something better for all of us.
“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” – Edith Pierce Lovejoy
We hope you will remember the many front line responders (police, fire, EMS) and hospital workers who work today to keep Dallas safe.
Merry Texas Christmas 2022
We wanted to share the quote below from one of our favorite holiday stories in hopes that we all find these days to be filled with charity, mercy, and general good acts of kindness. These are the same traits that brought America together in difficult times past and together we accomplish so much more than apart.
“Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” – The Conductor (played by Tom Hanks), in Polar Express
Christmas Weather
Christmas will see the Dallas area rise well above freezing today. Early next week we will see temperatures approaching 70. This is a great present – even if a little late – to say Merry Texas Christmas.
Other Side Dallas will continue to post about the arctic blast that hit our area.
The arctic blast arrives early this morning and already has Dallas Fire Rescue on multiple power line situations.
Dallas Fire Rescue has also responded to a major accident blocking traffic at Interstate 20 and Interstate 45. They also responded to a reported structure fire.
A strong cold front will blast through Dallas this morning. It will bring with it strong, gusty winds and sharply dropping temperatures. Outdoor items and holiday decorations should be secured!
The front should exit the region around noon.
Light snow is possible to the northwest of Dallas and there will be some movement to the east.
The snow will be dry and will be blown around by the wind resulting in no accumulation.
Other Side Dallas will continue to monitor and update throughout the next few days.
DFW Arctic Blast 2022 is on its way and will hit Thursday bringing with it reminders of power outages in 2021.
The National Weather Service is predicting much colder temperatures arrive on Thursday. A cold front will surge south across much of the United States.
The exact timing on the front is still somewhat uncertain.
The high temperature of the day for most will likely occur during the morning hours. Temperatures will then fall sharply throughout the day.
Peak wind gusts near 45 MPH are likely, and higher wind gusts cannot be ruled out. This will result in wind chill values in the single digits and teens.
DFW Arctic Blast 2022 – Prepare Now!
A major concern with the incoming weather is the possibility of power outages.
In early 2021 many in DFW experienced multiple days without power as ERCOT‘s inability to manage the Texas grid became apparent. ERCOT failed again six months later during the summer causing rolling blackouts.
One Emergency Manager suggested “charge everything – including back-up power banks – in the next day.”
Additional suggestions included filling gas tanks, having emergency supplies available including in your car, and preparation to be without power for a couple days.
