2023 Dallas Murders Up

2023 Dallas murders up against 2022 numbers, but Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia minimizes numbers in public comments.

2023 Dallas murders up against 2022 numbers, but Dallas Police Chief Eddie GArcia minimizes numbers in public comments.

Dallas suffered through 246 homicides in 2023, up from 214 in 2022.

The Dallas Police chief noted violent crime numbers are down, but ignored that Dallas police no longer take every report – including violent crimes.

Some note it appears the police chief is continuing a pattern of self congratulations for data victories while violent crime continues in Dallas.

Dallas police have chosen to ignore multiple calls throughout the year which has been an ongoing problem.

In addition to murders, car thefts were on significantly higher.

Since 2021, Dallas Police have limited the public access to real time crime data. It is unknown how many calls for service go unanswered because officers never respond.

The numbers are unsurprising for Dallasites paying attention. 2023 started with shootings across the city.

DMN Surprised By Pension

DMN Surprised By Pension

DMN surprised by pension mess they helped create with their electoral endorsements help in 2019 for current mayor, Eric Johnson.

DMN Surprised By Pension

Today’s oped brings another glimpse into the lack of reality that is the Dallas Morning News editorial team.

The morning PR post starts “First responders are there when we need them most. When someone calls 911, they are first on the scene…”

The ivory tower approach misses the regular concern of citizens who do not understand why officers do not respond.

They don’t respond for auto theft, burglary, and many other crimes – all of which is part of the current plan.

Exact crime figures are hard to know because Chief Garcia has gone out of his way to limit crime data for citizens and the media.

Meanwhile other city council members have gone along kicking the proverbial can down the road on pension funding.

The result is a $4 billion – with a B – shortfall, we reported on in August. The Dallas pension in crisis story is far from over.

DMN Surprised By Pension

DMN Surprised By Pension

Actuaries suggest the pension systems need an immediate infusion of $1.3B to stay afloat.

In August there was a suggestion for a half billion dollar pension obligation bond during city budget discussion.

These figures though require no promise of future fiscal sanity from the financial arsonists the newspaper continues to endorse.

Other Side Dallas expects voters will see a November ballot question to take on more debt while the city wastes funds on politically expedient projects.

Sunday Tragedy After Dallas Failure

Sunday tragedy after Dallas failure to protect its citizens in a domestic violence case causing a number of questions.

On Sunday, a man shot and killed his ex girlfriend, her parents, and their one year old son. That shooter is identified at Byron Carillo.

Sunday Tragedy After Dallas Failure

Carillo was not supposed to be near the family. However, he lived next door to the family.

Court records show Carrillo was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He then posted his $50,000 bond.

Carillo’s case has been passed for more than two years and he was out on bond.

However, he was arrested again in October, but somehow managed to get out of jail again. He then skipped a court hearing – another reason for his bond to be revoked.

Sunday Tragedy After Dallas Failure

Carillo was later cornered by police in Austin. There he took his own life.

Per the Dallas County District Attorney everyone was aware of he lived next door to his victims. The police, the DA, and the victims’ civil attorney all were aware Carillo lived next door.

It is believed the judge in the case should have known as well.

Similar cases in Dallas exist right now.

Jacoby Tatum is currently released on house arrest despite allegations of being involved with the Ali Elbanna murder.

Similarly, Teilor Johnson, is out of jail currently awaiting trial for the murder of Quincy Wyatt.

Wrong Person Intentionally Arrested

Wrong person intentionally arrested according to new federal lawsuit describing unlawful police tactics by Dallas police.

Silvester Hayes alleges in a federal lawsuit that Dallas Police officers Walter Paul Guab, Holly Harris and eight others misidentified him. Per his lawsuit they then kicked, punched, and tased him.

Wrong Person Intentionally Arrested

They also dislocated his arm before realizing they had the wrong person.

Hayes was arrested during an October 2021 traffic stop after police misidentified him as another suspect. He was then forcefully detained after police did not verify his name versus another person with a warrant.

This happened just over a year after the George Floyd death.

Hayes Life Turned Upside Down

Hayes would lose his security job after the arrest and detention and would lose his children to his wife. In addition he was unable to make housing payments due to what some call willfull negligence.

Dallas officers are recorded on bodycams stating they realize he is the wrong Sylvester Hayes. They also appear to be conspiring to create a charge to jail him under.

Wrong Person Intentionally Arrested

This case come just over a month after Dallas paid $1M over the Tony Timpa case – similar in facts to George Floyd.

One of the officers in that incident, Dustin Dillard, was promoted to Senior Corporal. That position which provides front line field training to new officers.

Dallas Pension In Crisis

The Dallas pension in crisis is not news to anyone who was here for the 2016 debacle that led to its near collapse.

The new pension crisis has been expected since 2016. The city budget debate coming is shedding new light on the old problem.

City council and city officials now face tough decisions about how to start building back the two public safety funds.

Dallas Pension In Crisis

In 2016, the fund nearly went bankrupt. This happened after money that had been invested in luxury real estate did not turn a profit. There had been a risk of default at the time

City staff says there is currently $4B in in unfunded liabilities for both the Police and Fire Pension Fund and the city’s employee retirement fund.

Dallas Pension In Crisis – Hurting Recruitment?

There are requests to hire nearly 300 more police officers and 100 more firefighters. There are also new requests for overtime funding for both sides of the public safety spectrum.

One consideration is to issue nearly half a billion dollars in pension obligation bonds, i.e. take out a loan to pay the current loan owed.

Other Side Dallas will provide Dallas local breaking news and updates to this important public safety story.
